Lifelong Democrat: I’m starting to HATE Democrats!

My sister called me yesterday. Not one to get worked up about politics, she was well past the breaking point. And, I thought I was the politically passionate member of the family!

The conversation went something like this:

Sister:

You know, I typically don’t get worked up about politics. But, this is just ridiculous.

I consider myself a conservative Democrat. I mean, people should be able to get help when they need it, but as someone who has never asked for anything in her life, never been handed anything, I think this should be on a very limited basis.

Anyway, my friend just told me that Obama fired the CEO of GM. The president fired the CEO of a private company! You know what my friend said to me? There’s a word for this, you know? It’s socialism; this is communism. Why don’t people get that?

Well, I guess I can’t call it much of a conversation. I just needed to let her vent for a minute. She has some other bones to pick with the Democrats, which I am looking into for another post.

I believe the “conversation” ended around the point when she said she was truly starting to hate Democrats. I believe my sister is a lifelong Democrat. She’s starting to HATE Democrats. Now, I realize this is just anecdotal, but there just may be others out there feeling the same. But, I digress.

I have read some opinion pieces claiming that Obama is not a socialist. Just for clarification, this is how dictionary.com defines socialism:

  1. a theory or system of social organization that advocates the vesting of the ownserhip and control of means of production and distribution, of capital, land, etc. in the community as a whole.
  2. procedure or practice in accordance with this theory.
  3. (in Marxist theory) the stage following capitalism in the transition of a society to communism, characterized by the imperfect implementation of collectivist principles.

And, now, this is how dictionary.com defines communism:

  1. a theory or system of social organization based on the holding of all property in common, actual ownership being ascribed to the community as a whole or to the state.
  2. (often initial capital letter) a system of social organization in which all economic and social activity is controlled by a toalitarian state dominated by a single and self-perpetuating political party.
  3. (initial capital letter) the principles and practices of the Communist party.

Now, take your pick. Based on the two definitions provided, I would have to say we are currently operating in an increasingly socialist state, rapidly on our way to becoming  a communist state.

When the press announces that our president is the nation’s CEO, can these blatant truths be denied much longer?

Here is what Politico.com reported this morning:

President Obama, with seven days of unprecedented market intervention capped by Monday’s ultimatum to U.S. automakers, has made one thing emphatically clear: He is the most powerful player in American business today.

Obama’s move to oust the CEO of GM and put Detroit on notice that he is prepared to let icons of American industry fail if they refuse to bend to his will was a calculated attempt to send a message, said an official often consulted by the administration. And that message was unmistakable: In any business-government partnership, Obama himself expects to play the dominant role.

“He’s realizing, ‘Hey, the economy’s mine now, and I better do it my way,’” said the official. “So the administration is collaring people and letting them know who’s in charge. The days of saying, ‘It’s not our economy’ have come to an end.”

When “an official often consulted by the administration” says that the dictator president thinks that the economy is his and things better be done his way, no one can argue that we are still operating under the principles of free market capitalism.

I understand that the people who voted for this man may be coming to experience an extreme case of buyer’s remorse. It’s been how many days and he has already radically changed our nation?

But, don’t lose your hope so quickly. You can still make a change. Let your elected representatives know that while Mr. Obama might be protected for the next four years, they are not.

  1. You should investigate the definition of Fascism, which I see as more appropriate for the current trend. Note: I do not mean Nazism, which combined the central state power of Fascist theory with German nationalism, anti-semitism, and a full willingness to commit genocide. However, pertinent to the present case, Fascism does not require that the state own the industry, only that it exerts full control over industry in terms of setting production (e.g., deciding what kind of cars will be built and how many and by who), contractual terms (e.g., whose contractually agreed upon bonus gets cancelled), wages (e.g., ‘prevailing wage’ requirements), and prices (e.g., what mortgage rates or profit margins are acceptable).

  2. I’m seeing a fair number of moderate Democrats I know personally saying pretty much the same thing as your sister… nobody’s said they HATE Democrats yet, but there’s more and more discontent with (and recognition of) some of Obama’s socialist policies.

The thing is you haven’t heard a peep out of the MSM about this (at least I haven’t). I just hear more about how Republicans and conservatives are antiquated and angry. And sometimes racist.

I think there’s getting to be more and more bipartisan anger, at least among us lowly citizens.

  3. Not that I’m about to start loving Democrats, but as a lifelong conservative Republican, I started hating Republicans this last cycle. When I hear Republicans talk about the budget, all I can say is “pul-eeze!” They’re all born again small goverment Hayekians now that it doesn’t matter. Maybe they can go after gays or immigrants – that’s real attractrive.

I don’t think I’ll go back to voting Republican anytime soon.
