Finally, Change I Can Believe In!

Well, people on the right have said that we should praise Obama when he succeeds. I can’t do that because I want most of his policies to fail. But, I will give credit where credit is due and he has tried to do something that I actually do agree with: he tried to cut farm subsidies:

Among the audacious proposals in President Obama’s budget was a plan to save more than $9.7 billion over a decade by putting strict limits on farm subsidies that are disbursed regardless of market conditions or even whether the land is actively farmed.

Although I applaud his efforts this attempt either shows how truly naive our president is or how truly calculating. Either he didn’t realize that this would never happen because of our trusty members in Congress and the ridiculously powerful farm lobby or he did realize it and that’s why he put it out there. Perhaps it was a politically calculated move to make it look like he’s really trying to make cuts, knowing all along that this is one cut that would never be made.

I will never know his true motives. And so, as an act of good will, I will take this gesture at face value. So, Mr. President, thanks for trying. This is one place I didn’t want you to fail.

  1. Why not load-shed the federal distortion of farm markets in the first place? You’re not going wobbly on us, are you? ;)
