Earth to Republicans: Take Sotomayor down!

Republicans just don’t seem willing to put up the fight Sotomayor’s nomination deserves:

Conservatives are demanding that Senate Republicanstake a harder line on Sonia Sotomayor, with new signs of tension between the Hill GOP and elements of the Republican base over the direction the opposition should move in the Supreme Court fight.

In a letter to be delivered to Senate Republicans Tuesday, more than 145 conservatives – including Grover Norquist, Richard Viguerie and Gary Bauer — call for a filibuster of Sotomayor’s nomination if that’s what it takes to force a “great debate” over judicial philosophy.

But in an interview with POLITICO, Manuel Miranda – who orchestrated the letter – went much farther, saying that Mitch McConnell should “consider resigning” as Senate minority leader if he can’t take a harder line on President Barack Obama’s first Supreme Court nominee.

Miranda accused McConnell of being “limp-wristed” and “a little bit tone deaf” when it comes to judicial nominees.

I should start building a list of all of the things I believe are wrong with the Republican Party, which leads them to continue to lose elections. I think if I did build said list there would be a common thread: their inability or flat refusal to fight the good fight.

Republicans need to forget about what the MSM is telling them to do, what would be popular. They need to ignore public opinion polling and the MSM’s reporting on that polling. They need to look at what they are supposed to stand for as Republicans and do their sworn duty to uphold the Constitution. Since the proof that Sotomayor will not uphold the Constitution has already been provided, with video footage, they cannot argue that they are doing their public duty by voting for her confirmation.

I know. Many of them are scared of being accused of just being the “Party of No,” opposing Obama for no other reason that to oppose Obama. Many are scared that the mainstream media is saying they are just voting no because they are trying to appeal to their base and how they should be moderating and moving toward the middle if they want to win in the next election. Once they are tied to the base, they’ll be tied to Rush Limbaugh, and then back to that “the whole Republican Party is extreme” mantra that the left seems to like repeating so much.

The truth is, this woman should not be seated on the Supreme Court. There are valid reasons to vote no on her confirmation. The Republicans just need to sound like broken records and keep repeating the legitimate reasons for their opposition to the point that the MSM can’t ignore them anymore. They need to grow up and grow some and not cower to the name-calling by the left.

  1. Aside from Sotomayor being a competent but, at best, average legal mind, what are the reasons you see for voting against her?

To be sure, I think that the mere fact that she is no more than an average judge is sufficient to vote against her when there were greater legal minds on the short list, and I have my own list of reasons to dislike Sotomayor as a nomination (e.g. her opinion in Maloney v. Cuomo that Heller v. District of Columbia did not incorporate the 2nd Amendment or otherwise overturn the decision in Presser v. Illinois) but I am interested in hearing what you think about her record.

  2. Time to begin replacing these tired old warriors like McConnell with some younger more aggressive blood.

  3. The republicans should get a spine and stop acting like the Dems who are just interested in the party power instead of what is best for the country. For that reason I agree with Dennis D, and maybe Michelle can start something with the slogan “Incumbants Need Not Apply”. I am also fed up with the notion of the so called Latino/Hispanic vote as if we were some kind of monolithic voting block similar to the blacks supporting Obama. As a conservative American from Puerto Rico, I am offended at the thought that I am going to sell my soul and values just because a Judge of Puerto Rican parents was named to the supreme court. For the record, let me clarify, children of Puerto Rican parents born in New York are known as “Newyoricans” and for the most part are not considered to share the same values as the islanders born and raised in PR. They have been tainted with the NY liberal entitlement values.
    My best,
