Senators score a “free” ride.

Cornyn and Schumer rank as the two top spenders of taxpayer dollars when it comes to travel for the first half of the fiscal year:

Sens. John Cornyn and Chuck Schumer each spent more than $140,000 in taxpayer money on travel in the first half of the fiscal year — roughly 10 times as much as some of their thriftier colleagues.

Cornyn, a Republican, racked up the highest travel bill in the Senate by spending more than $38,000 on a St. Michaels, Md., retreat for 59 staffers and by taking expensive, multicity charter flights throughout his home state of Texas.

Schumer, a Democrat, ran up the second-highest bill by routinely flying private charters to cities in New York served by commercial airlines.

To say that this is a bit excessive would be an understatement. And, Cornyn, good luck selling Republicans as the party of fiscal responsibility. I’m so sick of politicians living like rock stars on the public’s dime.

You aren’t rock stars. You are ordinary people. In fact, you are SERVANTS OF the people. No wonder Congress has such consistently low poll numbers. They’re all frauds duping the public in order to score a free ride. It’s enough to make a person sick.

  2. But neither one can compare to the ones using AF1 as a bloody Checker Cab!
Today he’s flying to Green Bay, WI to explain his screwing with our, so far, excellent health care.

  3. You do realize Texas is a big state right? The distance between Houston and El Paso is approximate the same as between El Paso and LA and El Paso and Denver. It is a 15-20 hour drive to cross the state in any direction. And our voters are not located solely in urban airline hubs…much of the state is serviced by regional airports that doesn’t handle large aircraft.

  4. “Multi-city charter flights” means he’s making private charter flights. Southwest has a special on flying in Texas that shows all of their flights between $100 and $200 round trip. That means he could fly 700 times AND help create jobs in the desparate airlines for $140k. Considering these guys make $174k a year, I don’t think I should pick up these costs. Let them send a bill to their constituents and then let’s see their re-election chances. At least the Republicans are advocating responsibility finally. I say throw anyone who voted for the bailout (either!!!) out the door. We can use a congress that listens to poll numbers showing that their constituents overwhelmingly oppose certain legislation.

  5. By this one revelation, we know that Senator Cornyn is nothing but a hypocritical hack—big state travel, my ass. He’s one of the boys and girls who have been in Washington too long for any good they may do. He should go and spare his Party the embarrassment.

Senator, you’ve outlived your usefulness. Go and darken the door of some SquishyCon think tank and impede conservatives no more.
