Meghan McCain…military expert? Not so much.

I have had the great pleasure, in recent times, of getting to know my fellow blogger Track-A-’Crat. I think he may know more about me than some people who have known me for years, but that’s the bonus of hanging out with a married man (his wife is fully aware and supportive of the situation; it’s not like that!). You don’t care what they think and you don’t have to worry about impressing them. You can tell them just about anything, including all of the things you wouldn’t tell a potential boyfriend on a first date for fear of them running away screaming.

Somehow we got on the topic of Meghan McCain. I know, it just doesn’t seem right that I continue to bash this poor girl. I was taught long ago that it’s not polite to pick on the handicapped, and she is clearly mentally handicapped, but I just can’t seem to help myself. To be fair, though, it’s also not right that she has the career she has just because of who her father is and that she likes to claim she’s a Republican while promoting them to be liberal. Anyway, it’s one of my favorite hobbies and it she makes it so easy.

Of course, my little conversation with the hotty only known to the outside world as Track-A-’Crat, led me to Meghan’s blog this morning, if for nothing more than a good laugh. And, of course, I wasn’t disappointed. She talks about an issue that she completely doesn’t understand all of the implications of and then gives her advice on what she thinks the president should do and how his constituents should react. Well, there is one thing to be happy about. She finally seems to be giving advice to the party she belongs to, rather than the party she claims to belong to. This is progress, people!

The issue of the day for Meghan McCain? Allowing gays to serve openly in the military. She says the president promised that the first thing he would do in office would be to overturn the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy. He has yet to do this and so Meghan is a little bit upset. See, she’s a “bottom line type of girl.” From her blog:

Let me tell you a little something about what I know about Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell: I have two brothers serving in the military and as far as I’m concerned, when an Arabic translator is kicked out of the military for being gay, it quite literally makes my brothers and our troops less safe. For me, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell isn’t just an equality issue. It is also a national-security issue.

This is the point we should be emphasizing for those who refuse to see Don’t Ask Don’t Tell opposition as a human-rights campaign. We need to bring the issue back to the security of our country both overseas and at home. Every soldier in our armed forces is serving his or her country in the most admirable way an American can, and we should be able to respect them, by not asking them to hide their sexual orientation.

Now, I cannot speak for my brothers, but I know many men and women who serve in the military. Let’s give them more credit. Just as there are no atheists in foxholes, I suspect it could be said that there is no homophobia in foxholes either. I find it hard to imagine that when a soldier is in a Humvee fighting terrorist insurgents, that the thing on his mind is who his fellow soldier chooses to sleep with when he’s off duty.

What’s more, the gay community can no longer place all the blame of marriage equality and Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell on Republicans. Yes, the Republican Party has a long way to go. But right now, we have a Democratic president and a Congress with a Democratic majority. The Republican Party can no longer be the only scapegoat for the arrested development of gay rights in this country. This is a president who made promises to the gay community—hold him responsible.

Of all the things I worry about in my life, my country’s national security is by far at the forefront. I am a daughter of a famous military hero and the sister of two soldiers. Mr. President, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell makes my family and this country less safe. Put a timeline on repealing it, stop making speeches, and show me the bottom line.

I love it when civilians stick their noses in military affairs and claim to know what is better for keeping our troops and America safe. The military culture is one that cannot be fully understood by your average civilian, and especially not by some spoiled brat who has below average intelligence. I understand who her father is and that two of her brothers are currently serving, but I strongly believe that unless you are actually one of them (a member of our military) you can’t fully get it. That is why it is best to leave this up to the military to decide.

The Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy is not an anti-gay policy designed to discriminate against or hurt gays, although that is how it is portrayed by brainless bimbos like McCain. During the campaign, Obama was just a naive pawn. Maybe he learned a thing or two after becoming the Commander-in-Chief that showed him the light of why allowing gays to openly serve in the military would be bad for the military and, therefore, the country.

There is no place for political correctness when it comes to defending our country. This is a military issue and should be left to the military to decide. Now, I realize that Meghan McCain thinks that she is brilliant and knows everything and that the world would be perfect if we all just did everything she says, but she is clearly wrong. Do we really expect a girl who doesn’t even understand the political party she claims to belong to to be able to comprehend the reasons that military officials are against repealing this policy? If I were looking for advice on how to slut myself out to stangers in bars, Meghan McCain would be the person I would go to. But, for advice on how to to regulate who serves in our military? Not so much.

  1. When someone calls her marine and sailor brothers “soldiers,” you can pretty much stop listening to anything else she has to say about the military
